Hog Heaven 04:35
Hog heaven, gone-to-hog heaven, Hog heaven, gone-to-hog heaven. A kid growing up, in the Golden Hills, Youngest of ‘em all, they called him Billy. Straight Irish Catholic, a Russell to be sure, Not one to bend, a best friend in the end. I saw it my way, I had it all, Seems like I’ve landed inside a dream. Started the Pigs, right outta school, Cello antics, oh, what a show. Loved Brian Wilson, Sir Doug Salm, The great entertainer, yeah, all night long. I saw it my way, I had it all, Rollin’ from town to town. Where’s-Billy Bacon? Whose-seen Bacon? Billy Bacon, my-man Bacon! Gone-to-Hog heaven, he’s-gone-to hog heaven, Hog heaven, gone-to-hog heaven. Band on the run, almost every day, Settled in Texas when, Nipsy came his way. Pain in his bones, that’s all over now, Gone-up to heaven (that’s), Billy’s new home. I saw it my way, I had it all, Up in hog heaven, still, singin’ his songs. It ain’t easy, when I wake up to find, I was dreamin’ of the life - I - left - behind.

The Way 03:47
Back in the day, I suppose I was finding my way, Seems like such a long, long time ago. I get a fresh start, daily, A brand new morning, A bright new future, Just moving along, with an open heart-and mind. Jump-Jump for joy, jump-jump for joy, A peaceful message rings, Lift up my eyes, to see the happy things. Jump-Jump for joy, jump-jump for joy, Love fills the earth, Singin’ hallelujah, the light of the world remains. I recall the time when I first caught it, The Spirit moved me, and I felt energized. I get a fresh start, daily, New each morning, A bright new future, Just moving along, with an open heart-and mind. Jump-Jump for joy, jump-jump for joy, Hosts of angels sing, Look to the sky, and see the risen King. Jump-Jump for joy, jump-jump for joy, Hope fills the earth, Singin' hallelujah, honor and glory reigns. The favor of God surrounds me like a shield, Freedom in The Way, it seals the deal. I get a fresh start, daily, New each morning, A bright new future, Just moving along, with an open heart-and mind. Moving along with an open heart-and mind, Just moving along with an open heart-and mind.

Just For Me 02:51
When you meet that special girl, When you find that hidden pearl, Time stands still, upside down, Perfect creation came around, Sent with love, just for me. Then she smiles and looks my way, My-oh-my, a lucky, blessed day, Destiny ordained, A burning flame that can’t be tamed, Meant for love, just for me. Ain’t no dream, I’m gonna scream, She’s got brains, looks, everything in between, Just found out her name, Sweet as honey, what a dame, I’ll-never be the same. She’s on the team, I’ve gotta scream, I’m crazy for ya baby, crazy as I can be, She’s got a lot of soul, a real individual, I’ll-never be the same. Never fear, you are near, Yes my dear, right here, An inner beauty from the start, Found a place inside my heart, Meant for love, just for me. She’s on my team, I have to scream, I’m crazy for ya baby, crazy as I can be, She’s got a lot of soul, a real individual, I’ll-never be the same, I’ll-never be the same, I’ll-never be the same.

about

A global pandemic. Wild fires tear through the Australia and then the western U.S. The U.K. abandons the E.U. A presidential impeachment. Oil prices hit a record low. And maybe life on Venus? What else could 2020 possibly have in store for us?
Will pigs fly? They have, actually.
Rockabilly veteran Jackslacks is back with a three song EP, When Pigs Fly, that shimmers like radio transmission from an alternate reality in which the world isn’t literally on fire.
The title of this follow-up to 2018’s Earthling Sessions is a nod and a wink to drummer/vocalist Jackslacks’ (a.k.a. Chris Giorgio) mid-‘80s tenure on the skins in San Diego’s own Forbidden Pigs and his friendship with frontman Billy Bacon, who died of rheumatoid arthritis last year.
“Where’s Billy Bacon? Who’s seen Bacon? My man Bacon,” Jackslacks sings on the opening track, in which he celebrates Bacon’s origin story, the early days of The Pigs, and struggles with the loss of his old friend. “Hog Heaven… Gone to Hog Heaven.” Appropriately, he enlisted three surviving Pigs to play on the song as well: axemen Jerry “Hot Rod” DeMink, Adrian Demain, and Tim “Steelbone” Cook, along with the band’s original studio engineer, Steve Wetherbee, who masters all three tracks.
Jackslacks is of course, very much a rockabilly musician in essence, his foot always planted firmly in that genre. But it’s never kept him from thinking outside the box in terms of arrangements, including this EP’s second track, “The Way," where we get — wait for it — a horn section! And damn if it doesn’t work remarkably well. Giorgio has always cited his Christian faith as his lodestar, and lyrically, he elaborates here. Accompanying him are Billy Raven on thumping, doghouse bass, and hollow-bodied guitars courtesy of Hot Rod DeMink and Gig Fortier. “Jump-jump for joy!” You are hereby challenged with the impossible task of listening to this track without jumping for joy.
Closing the EP is the romping, stomping “Just For Me,” driven by the sparkle and flash of Tommy Byrnes’ guitar work. Byrnes — another old pal of Jackslacks’ — has been Billy Joel’s musical director since the early ‘90s, also playing with Joan Jett and Taylor Dane, but what he brings to this particular song is the light yet muscular licks that secured him a gig touring with fellow Long Islanders, The Stray Cats, in ’84. And in fact, he plays the very same big, fat, Gretsch 6120 from the old days. Effectively (and literally) another welcome blast from the past.
